A Les Paul style guitar is the perfect choice for this song, though any guitar equipped with a humbucker pickup in the bridge position will do the trick nicely.

The amplifier rig used for the original recording is quite extensive, combining both a Marshall-style amp and a Vox AC-30 running simultaneously. The Marshall rig gives the thick distorted meat of the sound, while the Vox provides some articulation for the complex chord voicings. This setup has been the hallmark of Dean Deleo's live rig all through STP's career. That said, if you can only choose one style of amp, I suggest the Marshall style amp for the beefy power it provides.

There are also a few effects going on here. A chorus effect widens the sound, and some tasty reverb and echo makes the sound big and lush. Check out the settings I used:

Marshall JMP Model: Drive: 100% Bass: 25% Mid: 70% Treb: 70% Presence: 85%

Chorus Effect: Rate: 20% Depth: 40% Wet/DryMIX: 45%

Echo: Time: 240ms Fdbck: 10% Wet/DryMIX: 20%

Spring Reverb: WetDryMIX: 50%
