The intro establishes the iconic main chord progression of the song. The tune is in 3/4 time, and the down beat of each bar spells out the descending bassline. The strums afterwards can be more relaxed, and can emphasize the upper parts of the chord. It's really the descending bassline of the piano that defines the harmony of this song, so be sure it doesn't get lost with your strums, especially if you are the only person accompanying a vocalist. Note that the intro is played at a medium dynamic.

The verses and choruses play the main chord progression of the song with different dynamics and alternate extended endings. The dynamics are crucial to the emotion and feel of this song, so please pay attention to each section. While the chord progression remains mostly consistent (alternating between a few variations each time), the dynamics define the shape of the arrangement.

Watch out for the chord variations at the end of the third and seventh verses, as they lead right into another verse.
