The most recognizable guitar part in this song is the open string motif you hear at the top of the song. You will also play this during the pre-choruses. Here are some key points to help you play it:

1. The two bar phrase is made up of two sections. The first plays throughout the first measure and a half, playing the open B and E strings along with a rotating melody from D# to E on the G string.

2. The second phrase ends the motif, playing a bend from G to G# on the B using a swung sixteenth note rhythm. This part enters on the "and" of 3 of the second measure.

2. You will hear this motif being played throughout the intro, as well as during all three pre-choruses.

3. The movement from D# to E creates a nice, slight dissonance over the chords. The main chord progression isn't all in E major, so this melody helps tie it all together.
