Now let's look at the rhythm in the right hand. It's important to establish and maintain a steady up and down motion in the right hand, nice and relaxed with your wrist not too tight or loose. You want a nice even feel in both directions.

Notice how to mute the strings that you don't want to ring out.

Once you get a good steady 8th note strumming motion, you'll simply strike the strings at certain times and not at other, in order to establish a rhythm pattern. In this case, you're playing "ONE (and) TWO AND (three) AND FOUR AND" in each bar.
