In this lesson I'll show you how to play the intro and main riff of this song. This riff is used in multiple different ways throughout the song, so don't let that confuse you. The riff is based on the open position blues scale and the signature John Lee Hooker right hand technique.

The studio version of this song is in the key of F, but when you find live recordings of it, it's in the key of E. Maybe the pitch went up, when they transferred it from vinyl, or maybe he could sing it better in the studio up a half step.

But regardless of the reason, the most important thing is that everything that's played in this song is based on the open position vocabulary. That means you want to either add a capo in the first fret or carefully tune your whole guitar up a half step. But for now - in order to avoid any "capo confusion" - we're gonna break it down in the key of E.
