The verse section hammers out steady 8th notes using palm muted power chords. The chord progression starts off as I, V, II, which is actually not a very common one in rock music, which makes it interesting for the listener.

The second half modulates to bVII, bIII which also catches your ear in an interesting way. Note the pretty constant palm muting to keep the guitar out of the way of the vocal, only drawing some attention with a few non-palm muted accents in the second half. Really try to build the tension as you get closer to the chorus by slowly releasing yourself from the palm muting.

Also note the slight variation in accents to this progression as it plays under the guitar solo section. The chord changes are pushed, meaning they occur on the and-of-4 instead of the 1 like the verses.
