For the 1st and 2nd verse, both guitars are playing an A major barre chord (5th position) which is jamming out in between the vocal phrases. Keep in mind that some breaks are for ONE measure only. In this area of the song, you'll notice the guitar in the left channel playing some blues embellishments from time-to-time.

This is a classic rock rhythm, almost in the vein of a New Orleans second line, Bo Diddley type of vibe. You'll hear this rhythm or similar in lots of rock songs.

The rhythm is played by the band, then it breaks while the vocals respond to the call, then the rhythm comes back in, and so forth. This is a classic blues type of format.
