The defining part about Motown guitar was definitely the groove but also finding the right dynamics and the right parts to fit the pretty involved arrangements. It was not uncommon for the guitar players back then to share the sonic space with not only the rhythm section but also strings, horns, keys, vocal harmonies and the lead singers.

In this lesson I'm showing a melody line in the lower register of the guitar that works as a counterpart to the bass line, another great example of the great instrument arrangements that was such a huge part of what made Motown what it was.
