Minor 9 chords are a thicker chord than the minor chords and minor add 9 chords we've learned so far. A true minor 9 chord chord contains the following chord tones: 1, b3, 5, b7, 9. An add 9 chord is not quite as thick. It uses a minor triad (1, b3, 5) with the "added" 9 just to give the chord a little flavor.

The thickness of this chord makes it ideal for the jazz overtones of the Western Swing style. These chords aren't limited to this genre of country music, though. Wrap your fingers and ears around these chords so we can use them in progressions later.
