Definition for: Scale

A group of successive notes within a key, arranged either in ascending or descending order. Most scales have seven different tones, but there are some with five, and the chromatic scale has twelve. Scales are often displayed similarly to chords, with a representation of the guitar neck with dots on the notes that need to be played. The dots are numbered to tell you which finger to use.
