Definition for: Half step

A space between two notes analogous to one fret on a guitar. A half step up from F is F#. Scales often refer to the intervals between the notes in terms of half and whole steps. For example, the major scale goes (from the root) whole step, whole step, half step, whole step, whole step, whole step and half step (back to the root).
