Definition for: Fret

A section of the guitar neck, surrounded by metallic, vertical markers. Each fret corresponds to a jump of one half step in pitch. The open fifth string, for example, is A, and then when it is pressed down at the first fret it becomes A#. This happens because the string only vibrates from the first fret marker onwards, thus raising the pitch produced.
