Definition for: Dominant

The fifth degree of a diatonic scale. It is called the dominant because it is second in importance to the root note. It creates a desire for resolution within a piece of music, which is useful when writing songs. Any chord which is built on this note and uses others from the scale in question is a dominant chord.
