Definition for: Dissonance

A combination of tones which sounds uneasy and discordant, creating a desire for resolution. This is the opposite to consonance, and is less frequently used. It serves a functional role in songwriting, allowing the composer to create areas of tension. This can be used to add extra dimensions to the story-like emotional progression of a piece.
