Definition for: Diminished chord

A minor chord where the fifth is lowered by a half step. C diminished is made up of C, Eb and Gb. Within the major scale, the VII note is generally played as a dimished chord, and they create a strong desire for resolution. This can be used in songwriting to add tension and makes songs more interesting for listeners.
