Nothing more than the notes of a chord played in sequence instead of all at once.

The strongest note you can play against a chord is another chord tone. Learning arpeggios helps you realize where the strong notes of the scale lie. It's also great for training your ear to hear notes like 9ths 11ths & 13ths. After awhile you will start to think chord to chord when soloing rather then key, and you can add color to your phrases by altering the 5ths (b5 #5) and 9ths (b9 #9) and 11ths (#11). Learning arpeggios does wonders for your sense of phrasing too.

Good to be back. I've been battling educatedfilm over all this political crap for the longest time, and I just had to get out of there for a while.
Freddwe, arpeggios are seen mostly on the piano, but rock and jazz guitarists do a lot of sweeping (ask Skee1 about this. He's the expert on sweeping), which involves playing the notes of a chord in staccato succession across the strings.

i consider my self a beginner because i,
learn something new every day even by doing the,
stuff i,ve done for years,i'm alwasy experimenting,
trying new things or another, oppoach to my old way's,
of doing things on guitar. (Also i can'nt spell worth a darn so you,guys need to check my spelling every once in,
while please?(I need help with typeing words also!
I learn alot from all you guys about spelling alot,
of words .(Thanks guys) I will say this i can play,
guitar plus talk with voice better that i can type,
or spell.............(But i'm learning from you guys!

more note's useing 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 finger's of my, left hand.Plus useing a Rolling off the notes technique,
plus useing Hammer-ons plus pull-offs sometimes.
I would say if your new to Arpeggio's and just starting,
out trying to do them, try to just use 3 notes of a triad=chord like an Am at the twelth fret this would,
also be a good way to try sweep picking,raking ect.
Mabee also try adding a note then useing 4 notes.ect
Also make sure you learn them by useing your index finger,
plus pinky finger to execute the first note or root note,
of the Arpeggio.
Another thing you can try is use a hammer-on on the root,
note=first note of the arppeggio.
Mark begginner i learn with you guys!
P:S Chrishoph<-selled wrong) once you get the Moderator position.

LOL. Well, compared to me, you are an expert on sweep picking. (you introduced me to Frank Gambale, remember?) I totally suck at it. I can rake down through any manner of crazy combos, but when it comes to sweeping back up, I just can't do it.
P.S. I guess I'm the new moderator (although Jon hasn't told me what it is I'm supposed to do exactly) so here goes -> a-p-p-r-o-a-c-h.

thats a name I haven't heard on this site yet, I love the stuff he did w/chic Corea. The only solo album I heard was the power trio one he did with the old drummer from Journey & Stu Hamm, it wasn't very good.
It would be nice if we could have a chat about some serious guitar players without everybody jumping in screaming about Satch, Vai, & that knuckle-head from Metalicca.

Frank Gamble is mister sweep picker! that should be,
his last name!I got into frank back in 77 from reading,
plus takeing Guitar Magazine since the early 70s or,
late 60s .Without guys like him kirk ect would have never heard,of sweep picking,and a lot of so called sweepers.
Last i heard of him he had a web page up here,
He was also doing his recordings thro steve vai's studio.
That was this year.Frank gamble is a Fusion Wizard.
And yes i'm talking about the (crossroads=steve vai)
Frank gamble is a master of speed plus has some books,
out on speed picking this year.
He still tours every year mainly out of the country,
I would say mister vai learnt alot from Frank G.
Frank still lives in (Australia) Frank gamble can do,
alot of wammy bar licks with just his fingers.
Really Chris i could,nt name all the guitarists i've,
studied the list would be to long.I will say one thing,
you've been listening to some great guitarists.
I can name a few besides Frank just a few!
Kenny burrell,wes montgomry,in the jazz field.
plus countless others in all fields including (Metal)
My son got me into metal when he took up guitar,
plus i have alot of students now that want everything,
from New country,blues,jazz,rockabilly,southern rock,
Hard rock,Metal, and the list goes on.
By the way Frank started playing guitar the same,
year i started 1961.
On suggestions who to listen to i try to listen to,
all of them if i can.(which is hard to do anymore)
Luckly i have my son to keep me up on the metal stuff.
We do have a little cutting heads get to gather ,
every now then thats fun to do in blues.
I try to chat more with you on some of the great forgoten,
Guitarists from time to time.

lalimacefolle- tried downloading some stuff but my real player keeps booting me off, having some real problems here. Looks pretty interesting, sorta Frnk Zappa ish, I like that.
Skee- I'm pretty famaliar w/the jazz stuff, have listened to a lot of wes, herb ellis, bireli lagrene, emily remler, in the past. I have to check out more of kenny burrells stuff though, I only know him from the radio, and the stuff I heard I enjoyed immensely. Have you ever listened to Jimmy Bruno, amazing be-bop player, does the sweep picking and scale pivots etc..I had the oppurtunity to study w/him for a couple of months, quite an amazing player, learned a lot. I like the rock stuff too, don't get me wrong, Satch, Vai, Eric Johnson, Petrucci, Van Halen, etc.. are all great players, I just prefer the sound of disanant jazz harmonies and scales. Plus, it all sounds so worked out to me, I like creative and spontaniuos players.

scott was the original guitar player for the chick corea electric band. He left after the 1st album over personal differences w/chick, he was then replaced by Frank Gambale. Scott heads up his own band now called Tribal Tech, he's also done a couple of blues albums under the name Bad Dog (? I think that was the name of the band) there pretty kicking, the 1st one won a grammy for best blues album of the year (98?)
