67 year old beginner need help with G chord

When I try to play the G chord I mute the A string when I place my ring finger on the high E string.I move my thumb down the back of the guitar still happens.when I leave the high E string open it nice an clean...currently on fundamental 2 any suggestions please it's really Frustrating..thx for any help
