if your sitting down is the palm of your left hand supporting the neck of the guitar as you are playing?

No, the job of your left hand is to fret notes. A strap supports the guitar. Or the guitar should rest on your lap without needing to be supported at all by your hands.

Your palm should never support the guitar. In certain situations it can be okay if your palm touches the neck. But as a general rule it is best to not palm the neck. Your fingers need access to the strings & your thumb is supposed to provide opping pressure.
