Hiya

Absloute beginner with no musical background or talent.

I am right handed. My pinky finger on my left hand is fused so doesn’t bend at either knuckle.

Do I need the pinky to progress to a reasonably basic level? Or should I attempt to play left handed?

Any advice would be welcomed.

Peace

Hi Howardmark,

I would say that you should be able to play the majority of songs and riffs, without the pinky.

A pinky is great for hitting riffs that require you to hammer-on a fret that is perhaps 4 or more frets away but you can always figure out different ways to play.

If you're just getting started, you may not need to use your pinky all that much. Please let us know if you have any questions!

I totally agree with my collegues on this one. Many people have some sort of physical issue that they must adjust around - you will find plenty of wonderful music to make, that doesn't require feats of strength from your pinky.

Have fun! - Lisa

hi

I am left handed and have a problem with the pinky on my left hand it is fused in an L shape. when I started to learn 50yrs ago it was ok so I didnt try to play right handed now I cannot change hands

I can play 7th chords all down the neck 9th, 6th but cannot play 11th, 13th or any chord where i need to stretch. I can Stretch my 3rd finger further than my pinky.

if I have a chord that is impossible for me to play I usually improvise another in its place.

Its a bit limiting but hey what about D,jango?
