LONG LIVE THE PRIEST!!
"And Justice For All" tone
Hey guys my name is Tyler. this is my first post on the site, and hopefully i can get some answers for my question... how can i get metallicas "justice" tone with just a marshall avt50 amp, a BOSS ge-7 equalizer, a digitech df-7 distortion pedal(BOSS metal zone setting) or a digitech death metal distortion pedal, and an ibanez rg320dx with dimarzios pickups? I really want hetfields tone from that album. i know that he used a mesa/boogie mark+c or something like that. He said the distortion comes from the amp first and that he uses some pedals to add a little fuzz to his tone. The thing is though my gear that i listed doesnt give that smoothness and the heaviness that hetfields tone has. ive come pretty close to finding his tone from "Justice" but its not quite nailing it like I'd want it to. I know people will say that I should have my own sound, which I will, but hetfields tone in this album is amazing! If anyone has any of the gear i listed, could somebody PLEEEAASE find this tone or something really close to it? I would be eternally grateful. :)

yer it's a pretty sweet sound in that album, a lot of it is high output pickups which u have, and a lot of it is pretty crazy tube distortion - which you're not going to get short of buying a $2000+ mesa however if you go out and buy a pod or a modeller there's a huge community out their dedicated to emulating metallica sounds on modellers, so it wouldn't be that hard to get a sort of similar sound.

i did boost the lows and highs and cut the mids, but my tone isnt as smooth as the Justice tone. its a little fuzzier. if u know what i mean, theres the smoothness but theres also the crunch and intensity in the tone on Justice. i have the little fuzz and the crunch, but my distortion just isnt as smooth as the distortion on justice is. i just need to know how to get the smoothness.

well, digitech has very fuzzy distortion. even the models... very fuzzy and fake sounding. I'd recomend some new distortion pedals.
if you like the Boss setting, go out and get it! I guaruntee it will sound a whole lot better than the digitech.

thanks for the advice...now that i think of it, digitech does make fuzzy distortion...but i wouldnt want to buy the metal zone when theres a metal zone setting programmed in my pedal along with the boss ds1, tube screamer, dod 250 overdrive, pro co rat, digitech metal master, and the big muff programmed into the pedal.....its an awesome little stomp box... :)

you know what would be awesome? if line 6 made a modeling pedal.

that would be pretty sweet. but then again, having a multi-effects processor like the gt8 or the podxt live with all those presets and models would be great, too

Ok, back on topic...
The Justice album does have some great heavey tones on it. Here's why it's hard to get that scooped sound, and it still sound right, and be able to cut through a mix... They didn't scoop the mids much at all! In fact, they used a good bit of mids to get the guitars to cut through like they did. The mids got scooped on the whole mix (guitars, drums, bass, etc...), at the board.

For the settings they used it is as followed:
AND JUSTICE FOR ALL CLEAN[br]Bass - 10[br]Mid - 3.5[br]Treb - 8.5
I'm running that through my Randall RH150 and a 4x10 Crate, while using a MX-220 Copy with EMG 81-85s, and it sounds basically similar.
