Hello guys,

I'm looking for a good book on Scales to have as a good resource. Any suggestions?

I found this one:

The Guitarist's Scale Book: Over 400 Guitar Scales & Modes

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1549757075?pf_rd_r=26H84AVQ8Z3K9DEXEAKM&pf_rd_p=1ab92b69-98d7-4842-a89b-ad387c54783f&pd_rd_r=87953f6f-5415-4230-b26e-73719b2a4e4c&pd_rd_w=VZiEt&pd_rd_wg=DZotC&ref_=pd_gw_unk

Not sure if it's any good, I'm not experienced enough to make that decision.

Thanks in advance,

Jerry

What is your skill level? What are your musical goals?

[quote=justcallmejerry]I found this one:

That's a pretty heavy duty book! But it's virtually impossible to say if you will benefit from it without knowing more about your situation. Are you a beginner? Intermediate? Can you already play a wide variety of scale & want more to work on? Do you want to know scales to play blues? Rock? Country? Jazz?

Have you worked through any of the GT tutorials on scales & modes? I have a ton of tutorials on those topics in my directory. Scroll down to see sections on major & minor scales from beginner through intermediate & advanced. Also sections on how to use scales to improvise in wide variety of musical situations. Also sections on modes!

Hope that helps!

There aren't actually 400 scales and modes in Western Music. The number of scales is debatable (is there actually a natural minor scale, or is it simply one of seven modes?). There will be countless patterns for playing scales on a guitar, and most patterns can also be applied to different keys without running out of frets on the neck, so this book is more a catalogue of patterns.

I have a copy. It's pretty good, but could confuse anyone who isn't familiar with the theory behind it all, as some of the patterns are different to the ones you'll often find on here or other resources. On the plus side, it's pretty inexpensive.

I'd suggest you learn the theory of scales, then you would have a far better idea of what sort of book you need; or even discover you don't need a book because once you know the notes on the fretboard, and the theory of what notes make up which scale or mode, then you can pretty much figure out what pattern you want to use depending on the timbre or which area of the neck is most convenient at the time.

There are a lot of lessons on here covering scales. Just do a quick search on lessons by tutor, Christopher Schlegel would be the man, and he's even provided a convenient link to his lessons.

I wish this forum had a "block user" feature. Possibly I'm not the only one......

I haven't played in over 30+ years, so I'm pretty much starting over (although, as I go through the lessons things are starting to come back) . I'm currently going through Fundamentals 2. A guitarist friend of mine said I needed to know at least all the Major and Minor scales. I was just looking for a book to have at home as a reference. I like a variety of music that I would like to play, from Blues to Rock, but my preference is more along the lines of Metallica.

Thanks!

I have their Fretboard book, haven't had a chance to dive in yet into the book. I'll take a look at their Scales book.

Thanks!

Since you already have some experience playing you might benefit from working through these tutorials aimed at learning & drilling the basic patterns that diatonic major & minor scales form. The first 2 focus on all the scales in one octave.

In that case you might enjoy the blues or rock style courses after GF2. And you will also benefit from the pentatonic major & minor scale tutorials because those are the patterns most associated with the riffs & solos of blues & rock material.

We you are ready for them we have plenty of other tutorials on how to use those basic scales as the basis of lead licks & riffs. Hope that helps! Best of success!
