Hello

This in regards to the course Blues Style Level 1[br]The Notorious Key Of E[br]Can some one explane an open B7 chord.[br]My understanding is a B should contain [br]B, A and F notes. In a previous course[br]it was said to make a 7th you add the 7th note[br]and flatten it (1/2 step back).[br]B7 contains B, D#, A, B, and F#.[br]If A is the 7th note why is it not flattened.

Thanks

Ken

The key of B major is

B, C#, D#, E, F#, G#, A#, (B)

For B major triad chord we take root, the third and the fifth.

B - D# - F#

To make it (dominant) 7th chord we add flat seventh to the triad.

Seventh is A#, so flat seventh is A.

B7 = B - D# - F# - A

Order of the notes doesn't matter, as long it contains those notes it is B7.

Open B7

e| --- 2 ---

B| --- 0 ---

G| --- 2 ---

D| --- 1 ---

A| --- 2 ---

E| --- X ---

Same using note names

e| --- F# ---

B| --- B ---

G| --- A ---

D| --- D# ---

A| --- B ---

E| --- X ---

Thanks for the help.

I forgot about breaking down the B to its component notes.

Your answer was very helpful. I'm new to figuring out what notes are in a scale.

and now I can see where I went wrong.

Thanks again.

Thanks Christopher. [br]I still have big holes on my music theory knowledge. But the one thing I know is scales and chords relationship. And I'm glad to pass the knowledge forward. I feel that explaining things to others is a great way to improve my own knowledge.
