Annoying Buzz

Hey there,

On my guitar I've got a really bad buzz when I play the 5th string on the 2nd fret. I've tried raising/lowering the action at the bridge but it didn't help at all. I don't know what else I can try. Anyone got any ideas how to get rid of this?

How's your 2nd fret looking? Any big grooves, nicks, dents, etc, in that area? , does it buzz anywhere else? Do you only hear the buzz thru the amp, or can you hear it unplugged too?..............If the answers to all the above is yes, you probaly have a badly worn fret and need to have a good tech check it out, you may just need the frets leveled, or possibly a partial/complete refret, but have a tech take a look...............

what pstring said.. it may be your truss rod. Ok,it is V.unusual to get truss rod inflicted buzzes this "high" up the neck, but it's not unknown. Personally I would check to see if the string is hitting or rubbing on the 4th or possibly 5th fret. if that's not the case try slackening the truss rod- say 1/8th of a turn and see how you go.

In addition to checking for worn frets, you should have your tech look at the nut, to see if the slot for the fifth string has worn down so that the string now sits too close to the fingerboard. Adjusting the action at the bridge wouldn't have much effect on this condition.

I would advise against messing with the truss rod unless all else fails. You can't selectively effect just one string with a truss rod adjustment. You risk getting the rest of them seriously out of whack.

I was a bit hazy yesterday, perhaps better to take the guitar to a tech to have them check it out.On most guitars it'll probably be worth the $40-50 setup costs,as if you ever go to sell it you can tell people you've had it professionally looked at/setup,which wont hurt resale.

I had another look at it and it looks like the string is rubbing on one of the frets further up the neck.

The guitar has never actually been setup properly since I bought it so I think I may just go and fork out the cash to have it set properly.
