I am on Guitar Fundaments Power Chords and I am having the hardest time with the pinky G Chord. My pinky keeps muting and can't get a clear ring when I strum through on the chord. I can make it with the regular G Chord but then the switch to the C Chord is much more difficult. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Vicki

I'm a beginner so no expert but I came across a YouTube video video once that suggested flattening the top nuckle of the pinky to enable you to put more pressure on the string. As it's an outside string there is no danger of muting an adjacent string.

I use this technique myself rather successfully. I tried to find the YouTube video again to point you the way but I'm sorry to say I can't find it again.

By the top knuckle I mean the knuckle next to the finger nail, just to clarify.

I hope this helps.

Joe

Once had a professional guitar musician and teacher with over 50 years of experience tell me, "Fret the chord the esiest way for you. There is no right or wrong way; it's better to get the chord fretted corrrectly than screw up the measure. But, practice the faster way without the song and you'll eventually get there, too." I also thought that was good advice.

Have to agree with Medrod.

Finger the chord using the three fingers you find easiest, normally the first three, as you progress you will try again the pinky G chord and will find it coming together. Many guitarist never use the pinky G, so do not worry about it.

Had another thought that may help.

Keep the fingering for the index/middle fingers.

Move the ring finger to the B/3rd fret and put the pinky on the E/3rd fret.

Still a G chord and will get you use to using the pinky, then use both the normal/pinky

G chord when required.

Hi Vicki, I had a hard time with that pinkie G for a while too. I had to physically take my right hand and put my pinkie in position until it got used to that motion. I also found a you tube video called essential hand stretches for guitarists that really has helped get those fingers flexible. I have found that the pinkie G is important because sometimes you need your index finger to play other notes. Good luck.
