I have a Snark SN-8 clip-on

http://www.snarktuners.com/clip-on

As you can see the display is very basic. How do I properly tune my acoustic down a half step using this tuner? Should I invest in a different one?

I don't have that tuner, but so long as it will display sharps and flats, you would tune your bass E down to D#, A to G# and so on.

They sometimes call that Eb tuning, but you probably won't find Eb on your tuner he's hanging out with B# :)

p.s. It's not really a deficiency; my pedal tuners display the same.
...so ever since then, I always hang on to the buckle.

The question is how many red bars on the display constitues a 1/2 step. Or maybe if will actually display Eb.

And there is an Eb, it's Fb that hangs out with B# :-).

The red bars show how sharp or flat you are on the note that is displayed. They don't represent other notes.

Perhaps somebody that uses this can tell us for sure, but the manual from the snark website indicates you can use this to detune. It says it can display any note - flat and sharp notes should qualify :-) .

I have 2 different clip on's, a planet waves, and some other one, and they display as D#. Every note should display when you are close to it.

(I had to post again just to tough out my Eb statement. I should just stop posting.)

But, yeah, D# is how every tuner (2 clips, 2 pedals) I have will display the next note down from E. I'd bet money on the Snark doing the same.
...so ever since then, I always hang on to the buckle.

Tuning with Snark

I had a problem tuning with snark recently purchased. When changing from standard tuning (EADGBE) to Open G (DGDGBD), I had problems tuning the 5th string.while all the other strings could be changed. The 5th string could not be tuned to 'G'. Finally I had to tune by ear. I wonder why?
