would it be advisable to place the amp on the side of the room from each other to enhance the stereo effect?

It could help make the effect more noticable. But really it's only going to work for effects that have a pronounced stereo panning image. For example, a warbling chorus, or a delay that pans the repeats left & right.

In my experience, you only need to separate the amps a few feet apart to notice it. Maybe 5 or 10 feet at the most. Think a decent stereo system with a hard panned stereo left & right recording.
