I'm looking for a distortion pedal for a fairly cheap price. I need one that could go from a good mellow blues distortion, to like an early metal type distortion and make it sound good.. Any suggestions?

And I know that the Ibanez tubescreamer is great, it's just too expensive for me right now.

Check out hte Boss OD and DS pedals - they are pretty cheap on E-Bay and a lot of players relied heavily on them up untill recently such as Vai and Satriani.

Danelectro makes a variety of pedals in the 20 - 40 dollar range including a distortion pedal or two. I've never used, but I've heard them, and they don't sound bad at all. Reviews about them are really great. Surprising, since they're very inexpensive. Goes to show sometimes price isn't everything.

i use the Danelectro Fab Distortion, it does a nice bluesy distortion (think early Clapton) Hendrix style fuzz and Tony Iommi's tone on 'Paranoid'

I agree with superhuman,

Boss is making really reliable pedals for an mid-range price.

I personally use the Boss Blues Driver, its bluesy, but you cant get an early metal tone from it like you want.

Most guitarshops have them, try testing one and see what pedal you like best.

I would say a good, cheap distortion pedal would be the Cool Cat distortion from Danelectro. I bought one from my guitar teacher for jazz band to add a small amount to stand (like a transparent overdrive). I've used that on my bass and guitar and it is a godsend. I've used it for everything, even to get a Rickenbacker 4001 tone on an ibanez soundgear. I recommend it solely. The true bypass feature is great if you're worried about your tone. Check out the other cool cats too if you want other nice yet affordable pedals.

I would recommend either the Boss DS-1 or the ProCo Rat. With the gain dialled right down they can both provide a dirty blues tone and crank the gain up if you want to play something heavier.

I agree with a few people here about the Boss DS-1. Definitely a solid distortion pedal that's worth the purchase! You can look up videos on Youtube of whatever pedals you have in mind which are around your price range and pick whichever you like the most!

It depends on what guitar and amp you're using.
Tubescreamer type pedals go well with Fender amps due to the mid-hump of the pedal...

If you're looking for a Tubescreamer clone have a look at the Tubescreamer mini or digitech bad monkey (discontinued, but cheap on ebay)

I use a TC electronics MojoMojo(low to mid overdrive) into A Proco Rat (heavy overdrive). This way I can have options, depending on the song/style.
The MojoMojo new is $49. The Rat was used from a friend for $30.

I have to say the OCD by Fulltone has to be one of the best distortion/overdrive pedals. It is on the pricy side, but I would say by all means, save up and get it.

Your budget?

Which guitar and amp do you have and what are tones you wanting to emulate?

NUX do some quality built budget analogues I can recommend which might possibly suit your needs. Their OD-3 Vintage Overdrive pedal does a good early metal e.g. Black Sabbabth "Paranoid" era, and would do blues well too I should think. Yes I know it's overdrive not distortion, but that line is blurred anyway in early stuff.

[br]Their HG-6 High Gain Distortion pedal is a modern distortion, but "impressive" to borrow the arena annuciation from Quake 3. They describe it "Ready to nuke!"

I have both of those. Love both, very different, and agree with the emphasis about the latter's grunt. But you can tone it down with its controls, so it is quite flexible.

If you're wanting to replicate variable tones right across the spectrum to Marshall tones, their AS-4 Amp Simulator is as versatile as it comes. I have it too. Use it with your clean channel, analogue amp or PC. In terms of bang for the buck, it doesn't get any better than this.

To these old ears, NUX kit are solid performers without the big name pricetag IME.

Look for Mooer and Joyo effects. I can recommend also Behringer, But Joyo is my favourite[br]https://www.gear4music.com/guitar-effects.html[br]https://musicsquare.co.uk/137150g_Guitar-and-Bass-Guitar-and-Bass-Effects-Guitar-Effects-Pedals.html[br]https://www.sweetwater.com/shop/guitars/guitar-pedals/

Pedals are a good thing to buy used. They are very reliable. You will also make many buying decisions that you will change your mind one and sell them back.

Ibanez TS-9 Tube Screamers can be had used for $75 - $85 U.S.

Boss Blues Driver can be had used for $50 - $75 U.S.

ProCo Rat Pedals can be had used for $50 - $100

Boss Super Overdrive can be had used for $40 to $65

I would start by evaluating those four pedals. There are plenty of YouTube videos comparing them or stacking them together. As far as getting sounds that many famous guitar players got, in order...[br]Tube Screamer

ProCo Rat

Blues Driver

In my opinion, the DS-1 is buzzy/fizzy at high gain. A better choice, in my opinion is the Boss Super Overdrive SD-1. The SD-1 is a Tube Screamer clone. And you can get them cheaper.
