Shure 57 works good on most amps

SM57 half way between cone edge and dome, and a condenser room mic, in phase. Plenty of good articles on this out there. SM57 is going to naturally get the best electric atributes and can cope with high SPL.

Doing FOH for live shows us audio folks love Sennheiser 609s or 906's since we can drape over the amp without mic stands. Tone is darker and equal to the 57's.

Despite the now massive array of microphones on the market

many pro engineers still use 57s for mic'ing amped up guitars

although it is also not uncommon from what i have read

for top pro studios to try all sorts and perhaps even mic up amps

with loads of different mic's including expensive large diaphram capacitor

mic's such as Neumann U87s etc

and then use the combination of the many mic's to create their own sound
