ok here's the deal i just purchased a taylor gs mini-e acoustic, it has a 1 11/16" nut and i'm finding it hard to avoid the other strings when playing notes, so like i said i'm new to playing so my fingers have not toughened up although i already have calluses on finger tips but the pillow part of the finger spreads when fretting a string. after doing some reserch the average nut is between 1 11/6 and 1 7/8 on a acoustic guitar so my questions is does that little bit of exta space between the strings make any difference is it just part of developing the technique to play, i still have 2 weeks to do a exchange if i need to. i love the sound and look of the guitar but the main thing is to be able to play it right. jack...

Good luck Jack. It takes time and continued practice. But it will improve.

update, so i did what i should have done from the start. i went to the nearest guitar center and tried on some guitars and compaired them with some of the issues i had with the gs mini. and it turns out the mini was just too smal for me and did'nt fit right. the dreadnought was resting on top of my knee because it felt awkward to rest it properly over my knee. so thanks to the great staff over at sweetwater i was able return the guitar and order one that was a better fit. so when you have to return a item you have to pay the shipping and after insuring the item it was almost $100. we learn from our mistakes. i decieded on getting a taylor 214 ce it just felt right and the tone was amazing. i kow it does'nt give me anymore room between the strings but the awkward fit has gone away and ready to restart my jurney. oh and by the way the guys at guitar center were great, i explained the situation to him when i got there and he was happy to help and make suggestions ...jack
