I’ve noticed this green dirt like material on the neck of my guitar that forms under the strings. What is that and what is the best way to clean it?

You didn't mention but I am guessing you have an acoustic guitar. I am also guessing this "green dirt is only on the tuning pegs with wound strings. This green dirt sounds a lot like oxidation from bronze wound strings. Whether this is recommended or not, I don't know, but when I had this problem I used rubbing alcohol and a toothbush to clean it off. Be careful to wipe up excess alcohol because rubbing alcohol has a high water content. To avoid this in the future use steel wound strings.

Yeah your right on all accounts the only akward part about cleaning it is getting under the strings without taking them off the guitar. Thanks for your help.
