I have the Fender Hot Rod Deluxe which is basically the same thing as the Traynor 40W. My dirty is also very muddy, unless I turn down the drive to about 4 and put the master up a bit. This gives me a really nice screaming/overdrive kinda tone, very nice.
I am going to be changing the speaker in mine to probably a Celestion Vintage 30 or something close to that. To Bring the mids and highs out a bit more.
