A bend is where you play a note, usually with the third or forth finger, and the string is pushed upwards (towards your head) to become a higher note. Each half bend is a fret (so a 1 1/2 bend would be three frets) ... meaning you've got to push the string upwards enough to make it sound like the fret 3 frets higher up on the fretboard.
