It's due to resonance. Resonance in an object occurs when the forcing frequency equals the natural frequency or harmonic (therefore the same octave) of the object.

Accoustic guitars amplify the sound of the strings because they are tuned to resonate for the range of frequencies the strings produce. Resonance is also what causes glasses to smash when a certain high pitch note is played.
