FYI putting steel strings on a classical guitar can pull the bridge off !

Generally, well to my ear steel strings have a sharper attack which makes the sound more defined than nylon string. Nylon strings are easier on the fingers when you are starting out but, unless you are playing classical music don't sound as clear.
