I was forced to play guitar by my friends. They were in a band and had a gig but the bassists couldn't play so the guitarist showed me basic open and barre chords and told me to learn the rythym guitar for Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb and Time within a couple of days so he could play the solos.
Soon after the gig, I got my parents to buy me a guitar. I then learnt other Pink Floyd songs, including the solos. I then learnt Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix and Cream song. I also learnt lots of the accoustic parts in Opeth songs.
About eight months after I got my guitar I learnt scales and some theory on guitar (I had played piano for around a year and new basic stuff).
A couple of months ago I found this site and then learnt a lot more stuff and totally changed my way of practicing (using a metronome to build up speed). I've since become a hell of a lot better, dramatically improving on alternate picking and learning how to tap and sweep. I've also got into classical music and neo classical shred since finding this site, manly due to Azrael's tricks.
