I read one of Carl Verheyens columns from a while ago, where he discussed similar things...he mentions a technique of playing a chord passage in a very simple form, ie no lead etc, just chords. Then creating a melody over that, then working out the same melody in a different possition, even perhaps a different octave, then trying to add them all together.
