this very statement is - to use your words - a display of a lack of intelligence. i dunno which world you live in, but generally speaking, to change your mind is definitely not a sign of weakness whatsoever. and doing more than just one thing in music is everything, but not a lack of personality and for sure not a lack of musicality.

I think you would find it to be a 'lack of personal integrity' if the person was doing a change for the worse. What if one of the Backstreet Boys decided to do a rock album, and who knows what if it was a great album too.

If a 'rockstar' turned around and did simple pop '3-chord progression' songs, then that's a lack of musicianship, but if it was viceversa we would think that they are actually "improving". That seems a little unfair.

I commend artist that can completely change their musical style and not care what their fans will think. Either their fans will leave and they will aquire new fans of a new genre, or they will have both fan groups. Which would be great, but it doesn't matter if they truly had 'musicianship' because they are doing what they believe is the best music that they can put out.

How do they have less integrity for staying with a style simply because it will sell better and their fans are used to it, when they want to change it? That just doesn't seem to make much sense to me.

i would specify it a bit more and say: It CAN BE a lack of personality if the person in questino was doing a change for the worse KNOWING that it is a change for the worse.

and since terms as "good" or "bad" come (with a few exceptions) down to personal taste, you cant even claim that.

Agreed.

I think you can claim that, mainly due to the occupants of this forum, I think it would be safely assumed that the majority would go with Yngwie - good. Britney - bad. Again that is simplifying as a harsh generalization, but to most on this forum I think it's ok. Anyone that actually plays the guitar and is 'creative' is considered good. That's where I was going with the 'worse' and 'better'. BUT OFCOURSE you're right 'beauty lies in the eye of the beholder' :)

Sorry Azrael,I didn't elaborate.
Bands and solo peformers doing 180's with intent other than musical improvment(diffrent genre or not)is a display of lack of integrity...
Wanting to appeal to an audience other than the one that loves the music you make and you love as well has a trail of money or other incentives right behind it.

Its a compromise not only personally, but musically too.
If you want to do something different, then do it well and to full effect.
It has nothing to do with a change of heart/mind...its a change of 'drive'...
