Hendrix played Hear My Train A Coming on a 12 string accoustic if I remember correctly except had it downtuned a tone and a half and was pulling whole tone bends around the 2nd and 3rd fret. That'd be impressive on a 6 string. I haven't heard it in a long time though and can't remember if the bends sounded out of tune (they must've though, I know what you mean).

I was going to say I tried a whole tone bend on the 2nd fret while playing that tune and got it in the eye, but I really didn't. Would've made a decent story though.
