Try turning down the distortion knob, switching to the neck pickup, palm muting, turning up the bass and treble and lowering the mids.

I'm assuming that by "lowering the sound of distortion", you mean lowering the tone, rather than reducing the amount of distortion; i.e. making it more "chunky". Try the above tips.
