You are correct that the extra string spacing on the acoustic will give your fingers more room, but the reality is even with the extra string spacing, training your fingers, elbow, shoulder - basically everything attached to the fingers, to find the correct position to prevent buzzing takes time. So maybe just deal with it up front and start with an electric.
The other trade off with acoustic is the pressure required to fret the notes. Compared to an electric, it's pretty intense.
Having said all this, if you do stick with guitar, you will probably end up with both. I don't know anyone who plays who does not have both electric and acoustic. Even in rock, there is a lot of acoustic guitar work.
