The answer to your question is to keep going forward in the lessons to learn new skills and ideas and stay motivated.  But also make time to keep practicing the previous material until it's second nature.  This is the nature of learning a musical instrument, it requires a lot of repetitious practice and going back over the same things until they become gradually more automated.
