Guitar as game controller

Not sure if this is the right forum, but...

I have lightly surfed around the web, and it seems that it is possible but complicated. Thought it might be fun to talk about it here.

Is there a tried and true method to mapping your guitar to mimic a controller (or keyboard) for video games? I'd think some sort of cable like the Rocksmith controller would be better than a microphone audio pickup, but I really do not know anything about these topics.

Do you have any good links to something akin to a tutorial? This is so out of my wheelhouse, I would not know where to start.
