I have a 46 inch waist and a beer belly. (Working on it, thanks). The guitar and fret board are tilted back towards me, rather than vertical. Being a beginner on guitar, I'd like to get started correctly. Suggestions are really welcome.

What kind of guitar? Are you using a strap? Tilted back toward you a little bit is actually beneficial, provided it helps you see the frets & strings more clearly. The only disadvantage is if this position makes it harder for you reach your fretting hand around the neck to fret the strings. But usually this means you just have to make sure you reach far enough around.
Make sure you have good posture over all & you use a strap (even if sitting) to keep the guitar stable & in good position to make it as easy as possible to play.
I'm assuming you are working through the fundamentals course. You might also benefit from this old tutorial I did on posture & holding the guitar.

Hope that helps. Please ask more if necessary & best of success!
