I've been listening to "Forging The Past" by Paralydium a lot lately and I love the twangy rhythm guitar used throughout the Universe Calls album as a whole.

At 0:47 of this track, you'll hopefully hear what I'm talking about. What creates that sort of sound, or how would I go about creating it?
It sounds similar to some of the dirty guitars I hear in Tesseract and Adagio's "Life" album. Would this be some affect on an Axe Fx box or something else? I don't own an Axe Fx (I pretty much use Guitar Rig 6 still and do DI recording) but I'd love to get an idea of how I could get a similar sound.
I'm not sure if the YouTube link will do it justice - it certainly doesn't sound as clear to me as my iPod album copy but hopefully it will convey the sound.
At :47 of that tune the guitarist is using a pretty standard high gain overdrive rhythm crunch tone. About 10 seconds later he starts to play a lead using close to the same tone. I don't hear any twangy guitar timbres in that tune.
For reference, when I think of twangy guitar tone, I think more of a Strat, Tele or Gretsch with some reverb or slap-back playing county, rockabilly or surf through a clean Fender.
Hope that helps!
