My opinion is that you should start learning the very basics. Playing other people songs can give you an exercise, but not the whole picture. Start out by learning patterns and different modes of scales or chords. If you learn the different modes you should be able to fly through the whole fret board of what ever you come up with, fitting the theory of music. Start with memorizing what frets are what key. Ill give you something to work with that I am working with, Arpeggios; which is a chord scale. Here is how you come up with -A minor patterns-. The construction of -A minor- arpeggios is ACE. Just follow these keys to come up with patterns. I would post some of my patterns, but I don’t know how to on this web site.

If you play chords, then do the same thing. Find out different constructions. It is best to play both chords and scales, so you don’t need a band with 2 guitar players.
