What all the best engineers will tell you is to try things and see what works. One of the biggest factors is to feel comfortible at your desk. Get a good chair, since you'll be in it a lot! Having solid mic stands is also very important. You don't want to get ambient noise from a weird setup, or worse yet to drop a mic. Experiment, experiment, experiment!
