Song writing is fun and is in my way of thinking, probably the best way to see how the pieces fit (chords, scales) together.
I start with a chord - any chord - then go to "chords in the key of"

and start trying different chords together (from the key) strums, tempo etc. If I come up with something I like, I record it on my phone and write the progression down. Then put some words down and voila... something to annoy the dog with.
