My pedal, (Dunlop JH-1) was made in 1976, I think. It hisses and spits like a mad thing if I place it before the high-gain stage of the signal chain. If I use a stomp box for distortion, and feed that to the wah, the signal-to-noise ratio is better, but it's a different sound. In my case the pedal is noisy simply because the transistors in the filter circuit are almost thirty years old, and they probably didn't have very good noise characteristics to begin with.
