It all depends what your goals are. Music can be art, but it can also be a profesion if you have the attitude for it.
I also don't want to be too famous, I mean I do not want to make music for money, If I am going to become rich I know some other really more secure and profitable ways of doing it.
Also, it seems that you are too concerned about what people would speak about you. I personally don't give a fu(n)ck. If I do the music that I like and it becomes popular then I won't bother if other less succesful people call me a sellout.
Well that's really something really theoretical right now :)
