It depends on the tune & player. But even when you see a guitarists moving all over the fretboard they can still use the same scale.

Any given diatonic scale only has 7 notes (or 5 for pentatonic scales) that repeat over & again & can be played as low or high as the intsrument allows in lower or higher octaves of the same scale.
